STARTING OFF IN SALTA
* Overnight Bus from Buenos Aires to Salta (approx 20 hours: take cama ejecutiva)
* Cab fares are cheap in Salta so take a cab from the bus station to the hostel
* Keep in mind that almost nothing is open Sundays
After checking into your hostel they should give you a pink map. This is EXTREMELY useful. Some of the following recommendations are from that map, but others are not (I will give you street names, etc.)
* Hostel Recommendations:
-- Backpacker’s City (Alvarado 751) approx $60 AR per person/ night (comes with dinner and breakfast) and is located 2 blocks from the main square (Plaza 9 de Julio)
-- Backpacker’s Home (Buenos Aires 930) approx $50-$60 AR per person / night (comes with dinner and breakfast)
>> This one is the bigger one of the two and has a bar, pool, and eating area. If you stay at Backpacker’s City you will have to come to Backpacker’s Home for dinner/drinks BUT it is farther from the main square (but closer to the bus station)
-- When you get there they will try and convince you to buy an HI (Hostel International) card – I wouldn’t do it because you won’t use it the rest of your trip and there isn’t much time left and it is overpriced
* Food Recommendations (mostly breakfast/lunch since hostel comes with free dinner):
-- Doña Salta (N° 20 on map, Deán Funes (entre Caseros y Alvarado) –empanadas/guachoesque
-- Tapas/Wine place: I can’t remember exactly where this was but I think it was on Caseros – you guy go in and pick a wine and they charge you a $10 AR corking fee but you can sit there and then order the appetizer plate (cheese/salami/avocado etc.) which is nice to do for lunch
-- Coffee/Café’s – anywhere around Plaza 9 de Julio (the main plaza)
-- Choripan: only place you get it is after 10 pm near Parque San Martin
-- Icecream: GRIDO. It is great, cheap ice cream, and I highly suggest you get it bañado en chocolate (bathed in chocolate) for $ 1 AR
-- Other places I have heard are good but we didn’t go to:
>> La Casona del Molino (Luis Burela 1) - music & food
>> Peña Gauchos de Güemes (Av. Uruguay 750) - dinner & show US$15
>> Bar 77 (Mitre 77) -- breakfast, snack (café)
>> Alvarez (life tango saturdays, economical)
>> El Solar del Convento (Caseros 444), parillada
* Partying:
-- Salta isn’t like a Buenos Aires in that there is a big party scene but if you go to the hostel for dinner there is usually some sort of music/drinking scene and then everyone goes to Calle Balcarce (supposed to be similar to Palermo Soho – bars/boliches/restaurants)
* Sightseeing:
-- Churches: Catedral (right near Plaza 9 de Julio) and Iglesia San Francisco (Calle Deán Funes – it is red and right across the street from Doña Salta)
-- Gondola ride (Teléferico): approx $20 AR takes you to the top of Cerro San Bernardo so you can sight see all of Ciudad de Salta (I think it leaves from near Parque San Martin, which is close to the Bus Station on Avenida San Martín) tel: 0387/4310641
-- Museums: Museo de Antropologia (Mitre 71), Historico del Norte (Caseros 549), Arte Contemporanea (Zuviria 90), Bellas Artes (Florida 20)
* Renting a Car:
-- We looked at about 6 different places and Hertz was by far the best. They are located on Caseros (entre Deán Funes y Pueyrredón)
-- If you are not traveling for a full week I suggest you get the limited kilometer deal (which is cheaper – it limits you to 1400 km) but if you are traveling for a whole week you can pay an extra 200 pesos for unlimited kilometers
-- You have to be 21 to rent the car and all cars are manual
-- You also have to put a $1800 deposit (they don’t charge it but it is like a down payment)
>> With this deposit it covers you for all dents, scratches etc. The only thing you can be charged for is a crash or if the car is stolen.
-- For a whole week the car cost us $1300 AR (approx $350 USD) for unlimited km
* Artisan Shop:
-- Inya’s Artesanias (España 375): Great artisan shop that sells really cheap (but nice) mate’s and bombillas, sweaters, magnets, hats, etc. very good stuff! They have a llama outside so you can’t miss it.
BEFORE LEAVING SALTA: get maps for other places you are going
