Cafayate
* BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD
* The way from Salta to Cafayate is some of the most beautiful things you will see including crazy rock formations, “Garganta del Diablo” and “Anfiteatro” where there is something a little man playing instruments
* Hostel Recommendations:
-- DO NOT STAY AT RUTA 40 (even though it is recommended by Hostel International)
-- Hostal El Balcón (Pasaje 20 de Febrero No. 110) is supposed to be good but we didn’t stay there so I can’t say for sure. Everyone I have talked to though says it is really nice.
* Food Recommendations:
-- El Colorado (Belgrano and Guemes/Ruta 40) – one block south of the Plaza
>> Recommendations: Salads, raviolis, any meat dish, gnocchi, and you cannot leave without trying the pazooki (dessert)
>> Try Torrontés wine as well (you will be trying a lot of this on your bodega tours)
>> Owners are from Colorado, USA and are REALLY nice. Ask them for advice.
-- Flor del Valle – café / bakery (Güemes Norte No. 278)
>> Close to the entrance of town on Ruta 40 (one way street) across from the Gas Station
-- Al Almacén Wine Bar (Camila Quintana de Niño No. 59): We didn’t go here but we heard good things, but I would just buy your own wine from the Bodegas and drink them
* Bodegas (Wineries):
-- Keep in mind that a lot of wineries have certain schedules they adhere to and are only open until about 6 pm (depending on the Bodega)
-- Tastings (Desgustaciones) and Tours are available for almost every bodega
-- You can probably do 3-4 bodegas in a day (we did the first 3 listed but I listed others just in case you wanted to check them out)
-- Pequeña Bodega Salvador Figueroa (Pasaje 20 de Junio 25) Tel: 03868-421289
>> 2 blocks from Plaza (easily walkable)
>> Very small but completely delicious wine, and since it is so small they do not charge you for tasting if you buy bottles, and let you taste as much as you want
>> Very hospitable and bottles of wine are relatively cheap ($25 AR - $50 AR)
>> Cannot take a tour of the vineyard but he will give you any information you want
>> Approx 30 min – hour depending on how long you stay
>> Open until about 8:00 pm (latest bodega)
-- Bodega Finca Las Nubes (El Divisadero 4427) Tel: 03868-422129
>> 5 km outside of town (on the way out of town) – go all the way down Ruta 40 S (Güemes) and take a right on 25 de Mayo and go up the dirt road (if you don’t have a car you could do it on a bike but it might take a little because it is a dirt road)
>> Also small, but right next to their vineyard so you can see where the vines grow
>> $15 AR tasting fee, which is withdrawn if you buy a bottle of wine, which are also relatively cheap ($25 AR for white and rosado)
>> After tasting you get a tour of their very small but lovely barrels/wine prep area
>> Approximately 1 hour (begins every hour on the 30 until 5:30 pm)
>> Offer a lunch special which comes with cheese/fruit appetizer, lunch, and a wine tasting of approx 2-3 glasses which is $125 AR / person (must call in advance to reserve)
-- El Esteco Winery (Rutas Provincial 68 y Ruta 40) Tel: 54 3868-422139
>> Biggest Bodega in Cafayate – near entrance to town (opposite side as Finca Las Nubes)
>> Tours begin every hour on the 30 and goes for about an hour including a tour and a tasting
>> You can just do a tasting where you do purchases by glass (this is the most expensive bodega but the property is completely gorgeous)
-- Domingo Hermanos (Güemes y 25 de Mayo) Tel: 03868-421225
>> We didn’t go here but my sister/mom did and said it was nice too
>> Close to town so easily walkable
-- Nanni (Organic) Bodega (Belgrano y S. Chavarría)
>> We didn’t go here but my sister/mom did
>> Close to town so easily walkable
Drive from Cafayate to Cachi ( beautiful but windy drive, I would recommend it and try and stop in Molinos and got to the gas station to get chocolates as well as the museum I think… we didn’t go to it but I heard it is really cool.) It should take approximately 7 hours by car so make sure you leave before it gets dark because in the dark the roads are very dangerous.
à In between Cafayate and Cachi is a Winery (Bodega) called “Colomé”: this bodega is about an hour outside of Molinos (it says 21 km or something but it definitely lies). It is a WONDERFUL bodega. The wine here is incredible, the property is beautiful and it is the oldest bodega in all of Argentina. They also have an organic farm so they have delicious food (relatively pricy, about $35 AR for a sandwich or salad.)
